Ramadan is the Arabic name for the 9th month in the Islamic calendar and this month is a time where Muslims around the world spend the daylight hours in complete fast. The fast is one of the five fundamental acts in islam, also called the Five Pillars of Islam.
During Ramadan muslims are not allowed to eat or drink in the day, which means between dawn and sunset. In addition to food and beverages any sexual activity, slander, envy, desire and lying should also be avoided during the Ramadan. By that the Ramadan is not just about fasting, but more about self-control and deep worship.
When the Ramadan is over it is celebrated with friends, family and plenty of food. This event is called Eid.
